The Check Engine Light Is On — What to Do, and What Not to Do

The check engine light comes on when the car's computer detects an anomaly in the engine or emissions system. It's not a vague warning — it's a specific fault code (for example P0301 or P0420) tied to a particular sensor. The first thing to check: is the light steady or flashing?

A steady light usually means a fault that doesn't immediately threaten the engine but should be checked within a reasonable time — a few days, not months. Common causes include a loose or faulty fuel cap (yes, genuinely common), a worn oxygen sensor, a failing ignition coil, or a catalytic converter issue. The car is usually still drivable, but delaying diagnosis only makes sense if you actually plan to get it checked soon.

A flashing light is a different league entirely: it signals an active, serious misfire — unburned fuel is going straight into the catalytic converter, which can overheat and be permanently destroyed within minutes. Ease off the accelerator, avoid hard acceleration or high revs, drive calmly to the roadside or the nearest garage, and don't continue your normal trip as if nothing happened.

What not to do: don't clear the fault code just to make the light go off, whether by disconnecting the battery or using a cheap OBD reader. The code disappears, the cause remains, and the fault comes back — often at a worse moment. It's also risky before a technical inspection (MFK), as modern test stations check OBD system readiness.

What to do: have the code read with an OBD scanner (our standard first step) and treat it as a starting point, not a final diagnosis. Only an on-site check with live engine data shows what actually needs repairing.
