How Not to Get Ripped Off by a Mechanic: Red Flags and Questions Worth Asking

The vast majority of garages in Switzerland work honestly. Here are a few simple habits that let you approach any repair with confidence.

First red flag: time pressure. "You need to decide now, tomorrow may be too late" is meant to scare, not inform. A genuine safety issue (a cracked brake line) does call for quick action, but a serious mechanic shows you the faulty part and gives you time to think or make a call.

Second habit: ask for proof, not just a verbal diagnosis. A photo of worn brake pads, a short video of a leak on the lift, a printed fault code — costs the mechanic 30 seconds and guarantees you're paying for a real problem. At RedHat Garage, that's standard practice: photo and diagnostic result before any repair begins.

Third point: a written quote before work starts, not after. Ask directly what it will cost and whether the part is original or an equivalent — you have the right to know what you're paying for.

Fourth, more technical red flag: clearing a fault code without explaining the cause. The light goes off, and the fault returns two weeks later because the root cause was never fixed. Always ask: "What caused this code, and what was actually repaired?"

Finally, a second opinion isn't an insult — it's normal practice, especially for a major repair (gearbox, engine, air conditioning). An honest garage never takes offence.

Want an independent second opinion before a big repair? Book a diagnostic with us — you get photos and a clear explanation, and you decide.
